Reimagining Dinosaurs
In recent years, remarkable fossil discoveries and technological advancements have revolutionized our understanding of dinosaurs. Advanced scans and molecular analyses have uncovered unprecedented details about their appearance, behavior, and extinction. This cover story from October 2020 issue of National Geographic magazine rewrites dinosaur textbooks, focusing on five pivotal updates across five chapters: locomotion, hatching, growth, appearance, and social behavior. Each chapter features scientifically accurate illustrations and explanations, showcasing the transformative discoveries reshaping our knowledge of these iconic species.
For this story, we had a long text accompanied by images that didn't necessarily fit into the framework of the five chapters outlined for the illustrations and infographics. Therefore, organizing all this information and coming up with a design solution that would make clear sense to the readers was the primary focus of this project. In doing so, I collaborated closely with the text editor, graphics editor, and photo editor from the planning stage to map out the pages. To maintain a cohesive look throughout this 52-page story, I collaborated with a type designer to create a typeface reminiscent of dinosaur bones, drawing inspiration from an old wood type font. Below are selected pages from the story, and you can find the digital version here.
