Small Wonders
This feature story from the September 2021 issue of National Geographic magazine explores the evolving understanding of our solar system since Pluto's reclassification as a "dwarf planet" in 2006. While many still envision a traditional model with Earth and the planets orbiting the sun, recent discoveries have revealed a more dynamic and expansive system. Through groundbreaking research and exploration efforts, scientists have unveiled a wealth of information about the smaller celestial bodies within our solar system. This story delves into the ongoing efforts to study and visit these objects, shedding light on the intricate complexities of our cosmic neighborhood and fundamentally reshaping our perception of it.
For this story, I created the design based on the opening image of a comet, and carried this theme throughout the story in pull quotes and section breaks. I collaborated with the graphics editors to maintain consistency in the visuals and helped refining the typography to effectively organize the information. This story was the winner of the National Magazine Award for Design in 2022.
