The Ocean Issue
The Ocean Issue of National Geographic magazine (MAY 2021) is a comprehensive exploration of the world's oceans, encompassing five captivating stories. From the intricate societies of whales and their remarkable cultural adaptations, to the interconnectedness of ocean systems spanning 70 percent of the Earth's surface, this issue sheds light on the challenges and wonders of our seas. It delves into the plight of coral reefs as they struggle to survive in a warming sea, and showcases the groundbreaking discoveries of renowned underwater photographer Laurent Ballesta in the Mediterranean.
For this issue, I spearheaded the design process as the lead designer, overseeing all aspects from research, ideation, and creative conceptualization to managing other designers involved in bringing the project to completion. Collaborating closely with the photo editor and design team, I developed cohesive design plans and concepts, and prototyped multiple sketches to visualize the overall design direction for the feature well. Additionally, I led the development of a custom typeface in collaboration with a type designer, ensuring it captured the essence of the ocean and aligned with the overarching design theme reminiscent of a diver's watch face.
